Christmas Beers!
Winter Festive Beers Abound in BC
21/12/2012
There's a chill in the air, the Christmas lights are out, and it's that special time of year when breweries around the province brew up their best winter recipes for folks to enjoy on those long cold nights. Seasonal brews have become increasingly prevalent in recent years, as shown by the bumper crop of pumpkin ales this fall.
Now we switch to heartier, more robust ales - and some lagers - often enhanced with spices and other ingredients associated with Christmas and winter, such as cinnamon, coriander, ginger, and, we can't forget chocolate.
We have the usual suspects, such as Granville Island's "Lions Winter Ale" and "Father John's Winter Ale" from Howe Sound, as well as some new kids on the block.
Steamworks Brewing Company, for example, has just bottled two of its renowned seasonal brews - the Oatmeal Stout and Blitzen Winter Ale. Nice to see these beers getting out of the brewpub and on to store shelves. In a news release, Walter Cosman of Steamworks explains, "Seasonal brews are gaining new respect amongst the craft beer community as beer lovers want to experiment and have fun with different types of flavours."
Looking forward to enjoying these beers during the holiday season and into the deep winter months.
