New Looks for Spring
BC Breweries Unveil New Labels
09/05/2009
Spring is here and with it some new fashions, as both Tree Brewing and Granville Island Brewing have overhauled their labels/packaging for 2009. (This after Okanagan Spring did a major revamp of their packaging, introducing the helpful 'color wheel' in late 2008.)
Granville Island has gone with a fairly standard beer label style that has the addition of subtle images of Vancouver scenery in the background. Some may find it a refreshing look that gives the beer a bit more appeal on the shelf. Probably won’t change the appeal of the beer in the bottle.
Tree has adopted a new look that is more consistent and a little less cartoonish than in the past, but is also toned down pretty much to the point of blandness. Hophead IPA, for example, used to have a label/box that appeared to bursting with the glory of hops, but is now reduced to a few hops in the logo background.
So there’s the critique from this fashion critic. Packaging is important in connecting with the target market in ways that stimulate sales, but the label design is is not the main thing with craft beer. On the other hand, as my old Dad used to say, ‘a change is as good as a rest’. As for the main thing: let’s hope that the brewers are paying as much attention to the beer as the marketing departments are paying to the brewery image!
