British Columbia Beer Guide - Breweries in B.C. and Their Beers

Vancouver Island Brewing Co. - Add Comments/Rate this Brewery

Victoria

The B.C. beer renaissance first got a real toe-hold on Vancouver Island, where the early brewpubs were put together in the early 1980's. This brewery, originally called Island Pacific soon followed. It has seen some stormy seas since then, but a major change for the better occurred in 1995, when it moved to a larger, more visible, modern facility. Part of the plan at that time, which involved a revamping of all packaging, was to make more substantial in-roads into the mainland market. This does not quite seem to have come to fruition, although 6-packs of 341ml bottles are available at many liquor stores. Some brands available in 650ml bottles. Draft is available only on Vancouver Island and in Vancouver.

Victoria Lager (Lager, 5%) Blonde Ale (Pale Ale, 5%) Hermann's Dark Bavarian Lager (Dark Lager, 5.5%) Piper's Pale Ale (Pale Ale, 5%) Thomas Argyle's Best (style unknown, 4.3%) Wolf's Scottish Cream Ale (Brown Ale, 5.5%) Hermannator Ice Bock (Seasonal, 8%) Victoria Weizen (Wheat beer, 5.2%)

An absolutely fantastic brewery! If we can permit them their less than perfect brews (Piper's, Spyhopper, Islander come to mind) we can delight in the trio of delights known as Sea Dog Amber Ale, Hermann's Dark Lager, and Double Decker India Pale Ale. All three are truly the finest of their respective categories, modestly priced and local! What more could you want?
